Global Trade Item Number or GTIN is a unique code that will instantly identify the product. It appears next to the barcode and in submitting this to Google, they will then be able to display this on their Google Shopping database.
In May 2016 Google advised that any items which did not have the GTIN linked to them would not be approved to be displayed on Google Shopping. Quite a heavy punishment for those who use it as an advertising tool.

A really great idea for those business with large volumes of products is to create a spreadsheet with all of the GTIN’s listed, this means that you can instantly access everything you need without having to find the product.
